High Winds Close Washington Monument

Associated Press

The Washington Monument was closed Monday for the second time in a month because of high winds.

U.S. Park Police said the tourist attraction was shut down at 11 a.m. as wind gusts approached 50 mph.

Because the monument stands atop a small hill in the middle of a large open area, high winds make waiting in line there especially uncomfortable. Blowing debris also is a hazard.
