Home Runs Carry Shadle To Victory

The Greater Spokane League baseball race began Tuesday, although Shadle Park waited until the fifth inning to get up to full steam.

Jeff Lafferty and Eric Hayden hit back-to-back home runs in the fifth to rally the Highlanders over visiting Rogers 12-9.

Robert Townsend added a solo homer in the sixth and Shane Hughes scored four times for Shadle. Taylor West and Daryn Steeneck had three hits apiece for the Pirates.

Rusty Davis and Robert Bartlett had two RBIs apiece to support Sean Ruscio’s six-hit pitching in the Titans’ win over the visiting Bullpups.

Ruscio pitched a complete game, striking out five. Davis went 2 for 3 and teammate Kyle Sale hit a solo homer in the bottom of the sixth.

Jason Spears (2-0) allowed two hits and no earned runs in six innings as the visiting Indians (3-0, 2-0) stayed on Cheney’s tail by beating the Greyhounds (2-3, 1-3).

Spears didn’t allow a hit until Matt Wilson’s infield single in the fifth. Colville’s Josh Salina and Shane Meinhold had RBI singles in the second. A two-out throwing error in the third let Pullman tie the game. Colville scored two unearned runs in the fourth.
