Champion Starts Strong

Arantxa Sanchez Vicario is usually a highlight of the Family Circle. So far this year, she’s an afterthought.

The Spanish star began her title defense with an uneven 6-2, 6-2 victory over Sarah Pitkowski. But no matter how stunning or perilous her tennis, Sanchez Vicario will languish behind this week’s headline-maker, the youngest No. 1 player ever, Martina Hingis.

Hingis has risen to superstardom the past few months. The 16-year-old Swiss girl, who lost to Sanchez Vicario in the second round here in 1996, has won five tournaments this year and is 27-0 in matches. She got by Barbara Rittner in straight sets, 6-0, 6-4, and will take on Barbara Schett in the third round today.

No. 3 Jana Novotna had the closest call among the ranked players, edging Patty Schnyder 3-6, 7-5, 6-1.

No. 4 Monica Seles, playing here for the first time, ousted Adriana Gersi 6-2, 7-6 (7-4).
