Practical Chest Can Be Used For Jewelry, Lingerie Storage

Don And Dave Runyan U-Bild Features

Made of mahogany for its beauty and strength, this elegant jewelry and lingerie chest features real porcelain knobs, felt-lined drawers and solid brass hardware. But like all fine furniture, the chest is as practical as it is beautiful. It allows chains and necklaces to hang loosely to avoid tangling and keeps jewelry clean and protected. The larger bottom drawers are ideal for storing delicate lingerie and hosiery.

A good do-it-yourself project, even for amateurs, the plan calls for all but three straight cuts. The three curved cuts for the base are traced from full-size patterns, so there’s no guesswork. Assembly is mostly a matter of nailing and gluing the pieces together.

Materials for the chest include 16 to 18 board feet of mahogany, a 4-by-8 sheet of mahogany plywood and a sheet of hardboard, along with hinges, knobs, felt, jewelry hooks, nails and glue. Also, a mirror can be attached to the underside of the top panel.

The completed project measures 39 inches tall by 19 inches wide by 15 inches deep, and the side doors and top panel close flush, giving the unit a neat appearance.

The Jewelry & Lingerie Chest plan, No. 830, is $7.95 and includes step-by-step directions with 20 photos, full-size patterns, diagrams and a shopping list and cutting schedule.

A package of projects for the bedroom, No. C93, is $18.95 and includes this plan plus plans for a cedar chest, a blanket chest and a quilt rack. A catalog picturing hundreds of projects is $3.95. Prices include postage and handling. Please allow 3-4 weeks for delivery (for first-class mail, add $1 per item up to $3 maximum).
