Obituaries

Marion Henrie Mead

Service for Marion W. Henrie, 81, will be at 1 p.m. today at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Burial will follow at the Old Cemetery in Chewelah, Wash.

Mr. Henrie, who was born in Benton, Kan., died Tuesday.

He had been a teacher, principal and superintendent of schools in Kansas. He was also involved with coaching athletics.

He later worked for Hamphrey Aluminum Products and retired in 1987.

He was a 28-year Spokane resident.

During World War II, he joined the Army Air Corps was a B-24 bomber pilot and completed 32 missions in the European Theater.

He was a member of the First Church of Nazarene, the Moose and Elks lodges and the Veterans of Foreign Wars and was a Mason. Mr. Henrie is survived by his wife, Irene Henrie; a son, Larry Henrie and a daughter, Janice Lewis, both of Denton, Texas; 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Kittie McGruddy Spokane

Service for Kittie F. McGruddy, 68, will be at 11 a.m. today at Sunset Chapel at Fairmount Memorial Park. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Spokane, Mrs. McGruddy died Tuesday.

She grew up in Curlew, Wash., and graduated from high school there.

She returned to Spokane in 1963 and worked for American Commercial Bank and the Bank of Spokane and retired from First Interstate Bank as escrow department supervisor.

She had also been a volunteer at Holy Family Hospital.

Mrs. McGruddy is survived by her husband of 24 years, Frank McGruddy Jr.; a son, David Thiele of Costa Mesa, Calif.; her parents, Carl and Bonnie Buckner of Republic, Wash.; and three brothers, Marshall Brown of Bend, Ore., Dennis Buckner of Washington state and Kim Buckner of Knoxville, Tenn.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Spokane.

Donald Nelson Spokane

Memorial service for Donald W. Nelson, 80, will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South.

Born in Weston, Ore., Mr. Nelson died Monday.

He graduated from St. John (Wash.) High School and served in the Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1946.

He worked as a truck driver for the Atomic Energy Commission in Los Alamos, Calif., and Albuquerque, N.M., from 1946 until the early 1950s. He then drove for various trucking companies in Spokane until he retired from Silver Wheel Trucking Co. in 1978.

He was a member of Teamsters Union Local 690.

Mr. Nelson is survived by his wife of 57 years, Ilene Nelson; a son, Richard Nelson of Spokane; a sister, Roberta Samel of Portland; and two brothers, Samuel Nelson of Portland and Charles Nelson of Seattle.

Alfred Stella Spokane

Funeral Mass for Alfred C. Stella, 71, will be at 11 a.m. today at St. Thomas More Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mr. Stella, who was born in Blairmore, Alberta, died Wednesday.

He was a 38-year Spokane resident and had worked as a pipe fitter with Burlington Northern Railroad.

He was a member of St. Thomas More Parish, the Eagles, Moose and Elks lodges.

His wife, Rose Stella, died in 1993.

He is survived by a son, Randy Stella of Spokane; two daughters, Debbie Rock of Seattle and Tammy Stella of Spokane; two brothers, Joe Stella of Blairmore and Mario Stella of Calgary, Alberta; two sisters, Katie Mellars and Jeana Radulski, both of Calgary and six grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Ariana Clinkenbeard Spokane

Memorial service for Ariana C. (Winter) Clinkenbeard, 23, is planned for 4:30 p.m. today at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home.

Mrs. Clinkenbeard died Tuesday of unknown natural causes. She was born in Bellflower, Calif.

She had lived in Spokane for 14 years and graduated from Central Valley High School. She attended Spokane Falls Community College.

Survivors include her husband of four years, Luke Clinkenbeard; two daughters, Jade and Shelby, both at home; her mother, Geneva Courchaine of Cheney; her father, Andrew Winter Jr. of Grants Pass, Ore.; her stepfather, Terry Courchaine of Cheney; three brothers, Paul Antuna of Wolf Creek, Ore., and William and David Courchaine, both of Cheney; a stepbrother, Justin Winter of Grants Pass and a stepsister, Carley Winter.

Evelyn Dorn Spokane

Memorial service for Evelyn Olive Dorn, 89, is planned for 2 p.m. Monday at Riplinger Funeral Home.

Mrs. Dorn, who died Wednesday, was born in Cozad, Neb.

She had previously lived in Echo, Ore., and moved to Spokane in 1927.

Mrs. Dorn was a homemaker, a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and a square dancer.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Dorn.

Mrs. Dorn is survived by a daughter, Areta Harris of Spokane; two granddaughters; three great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriner’s Hospital for Children.

Carl Funk Spokane

Funeral service for Carl August Funk, 97, is set for 1 p.m. today at Sunset Mausoleum at Fairmount Memorial Park. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Funk died Thursday.

He was born in Brazil, Ind.

He had lived in Spokane since 1975 and was a retired resort owner. He also had worked in appliance repair.

His wife, Louise Funk, died in 1996.

Mr. Funk is survived by two sons, James Funk of Nine Mile Falls, and William Funk of Spokane and three grandchildren.
