Angels Outrun Yankees In 12th

Jim Edmonds scored when the New York Yankees could not turn a double play on Gary DiSarcina’s one-out grounder in the 12th inning Tuesday night, giving the Anaheim Angels a 10-9 victory at Anaheim, Calif.

The Angels, who tied it at 9 on pinch-hitter Jack Howell’s sacrifice fly in the ninth off Mariano Rivera, ended a three-game losing streak.

Reggie Jefferson’s homer ignited a seven-run seventh that Darren Bragg capped with a grand slam for Boston.

Bragg, who had an RBI single earlier, had a career-high five RBIs and Jefferson hit a pair of two-run homers.

The scheduled game between Toronto and Chicago was postponed because of cold weather.

The starting time for today’s game has been changed to 1:05 p.m. from 7:05 p.m. because of a forecast for more severe cold.

Clearing the bases

Bob Hamelin, the A.L. Rookie of the Year just three seasons ago, signed a minor-league contract Tuesday with the Detroit Tigers… . In Los Angeles, a probation revocation hearing for Yankees player Darryl Strawberry was postponed for undisclosed reasons and it is not known why the government is seeking to revoke the probation.

Baltimore’s Rafael Palmeiro on the treatment of Roberto Alomar upon his return after serving a suspension for spitting at an umpire: “At some point, people have to let it go. They can’t keep treating him like he’s a criminal.” In a related development, baseball owners, players and umpires have agreed to draft a statement saying physical contact on the field will not be tolerated. The working group agreed the statement will say the sides have mutual respect for one another… . Ken Griffey, who hit five home runs in Seattle’s first five games of the season, was named A.L. player of the week. Griffey hit .444, scored a league-leading nine runs and also had eight RBIs.
