T-Wolves’ Win Shows They’re Ready For Iel

It was the type of game that the Lake City High School baseball team would have lost the past two years.

It’s also a measure as to how far the Timberwolves have come since the school opened three years ago.

We’re not suggesting that Lake City is poised to contend for the Inland Empire League championship. But the T-Wolves are ready to step out of the basement.

Darkness Tuesday kept the Timberwolves from sweeping visiting Sandpoint in a league-opening doubleheader for both teams. LC rallied for a 3-2 win in the opener and was comfortably ahead at 8-2 in the nightcap when the game was suspended in the bottom of the fourth inning, a half-inning shy of an official game.

LC coach Cory Bridges mildly protested the umpires’ decision to end the second game, saying they wasted precious daylight twice in the same inning trying to decide whether to continue.

Unless the game proves critical to postseason seeding, it’s doubtful it will be completed.

The T-Wolves improved to 4-2 overall. Sandpoint suffered its first loss to fall to 4-1.

“We really scratched one out,” Bridges said of the first-game rally. “I don’t know if either team played well enough to win it.”

Neither team was particularly efficient at the plate, on the mound or on defense.

About a half-dozen scouts were present at the start of the first game to take a look at LC’s 6-foot-6 senior right-handed pitcher, Andy Potter.

Potter was erratic, striking out nine but walking six. He threw 100 pitches in four innings, prompting Bridges to pull him with the T-Wolves trailing 1-0.

Sandpoint’s first run was unearned in the second inning. Greg Leverich reached on an error to open the inning and scored on a passed ball.

LC’s first run, in the fifth, also was unearned. An alert Scott Moglia scored from second on a fielding error.

Sandpoint regained the lead in the sixth on a bases-loaded walk.

But LC came back in the bottom of the inning. Jeff Brennan singled and advanced to third on a two-base error when the ball rolled under an outfielder’s glove. Josh Merk, who had reached on a fielder’s choice, scored on the miscue.

Pinch-hitting Ben Orsua followed with what would prove to be the game-winning hit.

Reliever Tim Moering (1-0) picked up the win and Sean Moglia earned a save.

“(Jens) Weiden didn’t deserve to lose that game. He pitched a good game,” first-year Sandpoint coach Mike Givens said.

Weiden, a left-hander with some pop, had seven strikeouts and five walks. The Bulldogs committed five errors behind him.

“We’re going to have to learn to hit left-handers because we’re going to see a lot of them in league,” Bridges said.

The Vikings (5-3 overall, 2-2 league) rallied from a 6-4 deficit to knock off upset-minded Post Falls (1-7, 0-2).

Post Falls got to Viking starter Mark Scates early, scoring all six of its runs in the first three innings. But Scott Ross, the second reliever for CdA, came in and shut out the Trojans the final four innings.

Recently promoted sophomore Rob Crain had two hits and two RBIs for CdA. Scott Chamberlain and Josh Mann had two hits each for PF.
