Sanchez Vicario Upset

Mary Pierce, the 11th seed at the Bausch & Lomb Championships, handily defeated No. 2 Arantxa Sanchez Vicario of Spain 6-2, 6-1 in a quarterfinal match. The day was filled with upsets as two other top seeds went down to defeat.

Iva Majoli surprised fourth-seeded Conchita Martinez 1-6, 6-3, 6-3. Amanda Coetzer continued her hot play with a 6-2, 6-4 triumph over sixth-seeded Mary Joe Fernandez.
