Claude ‘Red’ Hutchings Coeur d’Alene

Graveside service for Claude B. “Red” Hutchings, 87, will be Saturday at 5 p.m. at the Forest Cemetery in Coeur d’Alene. English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Hutchings, who was born in Missouri, died Monday after suffering for an extended period of time from Alzheimer’s disease.

Because of that condition, he was not aware that his son, Spokane psychologist Donald Hutchings, was kidnapped in July 1995 by rebels in Kashmir.

“It’s a blessing that he never knew,” said Donald Hutchings’ wife, Jane Schelly. “The tragedy is he never saw his son again before he died.”

He grew up in Nampa, Idaho, and served in the Army. Mr. Hutchings later moved to the Dalton Gardens/ Hayden, Idaho, area.

He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Mr. Hutchings was a member of the Gentleman on Horseback riding club and displayed his leather and rawhide crafts in the Idaho State Traveling Museum in the 1980s.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Audrea, in 1980.

Survivors include Donald Hutchings, who has not been heard from since the fall of 1995; a stepson, Butch Stoddard of Dalton Gardens; a stepdaughter, Bobbie Wolf of Hayden; and a sister, Ila Adler of Yakima.

Dorothy Klein Kingston, Idaho

Vigil service for Dorothy Theresa Klein, 77, will be today at 7 p.m. at St. Rita’s Catholic Church in Kellogg. Service will be Friday at 10 a.m. at St. Rita’s Catholic Church. Burial will be at the Greenwood Cemetery in Kellogg. Shoshone Funeral Service in Kellogg is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Klein, who was born in Minnesota, died Monday.

She served with the Women’s Air Corps during World War II. In 1959 she moved from Minneapolis to the Silver Valley.

Mrs. Klein was a homemaker and a member of St. Rita’s Catholic Church, the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Silver Valley Right to Life.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 24 years, Aaron, in 1971.

Survivors include five daughters, Catherine Brickey of South Dakota, Mary Ann Mack of Lewiston, Carolyn Simpson of Boise, Sheila Webber of Hayden, Idaho, and Lisa Lane of Kingston; two sisters, Florence Westmeyer of Coeur d’Alene and Sister Mary Xavier Mengelkoch of the Order of Saint Benedict, of Duluth, Minn.; 17 grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Ellen Fisher Spokane

No service will be held for Ellen B. Fisher, 82, at her request.

Mrs. Fisher died Tuesday.

Born in Sioux City, Iowa, she had lived in Boise, before moving to Spokane 11 years ago.

She was a member of the South Hill Senior Center and the Silver Lanes senior bowling league.

Mrs. Fisher is survived by two daughters, Wynn “Beverly” Myers of Coeur d’Alene and Donna Taylor of Portland; three sisters, Dora Herbert of Poway, Calif., Bert Coder of Grandview, Wash., and Della Daniels of Simi Valley, Calif.; two brothers, Ben Strawn of Eagle, Idaho, and Jim Strawn of Colorado; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Oliver Wilson Bonners Ferry, Idaho

Graveside service for Oliver Cecil Wilson, 81, will be today at 11 a.m. at Grandview Cemetery in Bonners Ferry. Bonners Ferry Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Wilson, who was born in Nebraska, died Saturday.

He grew up in California and Oregon before moving to Twin Falls, Idaho, where he worked as a farmer and ranch hand.

Mr. Wilson served in the Navy during World War II and received several medals and ribbons during his military service.

He lived in Ellensburg, Wash., then moved to Bonners Ferry in 1949.

Mr. Wilson had worked as a power company lineman and a carpenter before he began his own electrical business in 1958. He operated it until retiring in 1977.

Mr. Wilson was a member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association and the USS Maryland Veterans Association.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Jansje; three sons, Don, George and Peter Wilson, all of Bonners Ferry; a brother, Elton Wilson of Blackfoot, Idaho; and a sister, Lorece. Memorials may be made to the Shriner’s Hospital for Children in Spokane.

Eleanor (Van Horn) Dark Coeur d’Alene

Private burial for Eleanor Grace (Van Horn) Dark, 79, was held Wednesday. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Dark, who was born in Bayonne, N.Y., died on April 10.

She had worked for two years during World War II as an assistant to the head of the Office of War Information in London, and eight years as assistant to New York playwright Garson Kanin.

She was an assistant to the owner of the Beverly Hills Hotel for 25 years, later becoming a member of the board of directors.

Mrs. Dark lived in Italy from 1950-51, then moved to Los Angeles in 1952, where she remained for 44 years. In 1996 she moved to Coeur d’Alene.

Mrs. Dark was preceded in death by her husband of 33 years, Alfred Francis DeLeo, also known by his stage name Christopher Dark, in 1971.

Survivors include a daughter, Pamela DeLeo of Coeur d’Alene; and two nephews, Frederick Slocum of New Jersey and Gianalfonso D’Avossa of Rome, Italy.

R.G. Wright Spokane

No service will be held for R.G. Wright, 75, at his request.

Mr. Wright, who was born Blackfoot, Idaho, died Tuesday.

He graduated from Blackfoot High School and had lived in the Priest Lake, Idaho, area for 14 years. He recently moved to Spokane.

Mr. Wright served in the Air Corps during World War II and worked for Culligan Water Softener Co. for more than 20 years.

He was a member of the Priest Lake Lions Club, and had served as waterways commissioner for Bonner County and as fire commissioner for the Coolin (Idaho) Fire District.

Mr. Wright is survived by his wife, Teddy; a daughter, Ann Anderson of Anchorage, Alaska; a son, Gerald Wright of Spokane; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Coolin Fire District or the Priest Lake Emergency Medical Technicians.

Mildred Sumner Coeur d’Alene

Memorial service for Mildred Marie Sumner, 76, will be held at a later date. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Sumner, who was born in Drumright, Okla., died Sunday.

She grew up and graduated from high school in Drumright, and went on to attend Oklahoma A&M, playing college basketball.

Mrs. Sumner moved to Dayton, Wash., then to Nampa, Idaho, before moving to Cushing, Okla. She returned to Dayton in 1955, then moved to St. Maries, before settling in Coeur d’Alene in 1974.

Mrs. Sumner was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary.

Her husband, Lilburn, died in 1992.

Survivors include three sons, Thad Sumner of Redmond, Wash., Larry Sumner of Coeur d’Alene and Garry Sumner of St. Maries; a daughter, Janice Keith of Seattle; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Lois Hickey Sandpoint

Service for Lois Hammond Hickey, 85, will be today at 2 p.m. at Coffelt’s Moon Chapel in Sandpoint. Interment will follow at the Pinecrest Memorial Park. Coffelt Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Hickey, who was born in Sandpoint, died Saturday.

She graduated from Sandpoint High School and Lewiston Normal Teachers College.

Mrs. Hickey taught school in Wallace, then moved to the Sandpoint area where she taught fourth and sixth grades at Oden, Sunnyside, Wrencoe, Old Farmin, Kootenai, Southside and Sandpoint Junior High schools. She retired in 1977.

Mrs. Hickey was a past president of the Kootenai PTA and a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Sandpoint.

Survivors include her husband of 52 years, Jack; a son, Jim Hickey, and a daughter, Jacki Holt, both of Sandpoint; a brother, Bob Hammond of Seattle; and four grandchildren, Dean, Jeff, Mark and Kristi Holt, all of Sandpoint.

Eva Johnson Spokane

Visitation for Eva Alice (Rickel) Johnson, 90, is scheduled from 3 to 9 p.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Riverside Memorial Park.

Born in Melrose, Idaho, Mrs. Johnson died Saturday.

She had lived in Lind, Wash., Big Timber, Mont., and Liberty Lake.

After marrying Maynard Johnson in 1923 in Coeur d’Alene, they settled in Leona, Idaho, before moving to the Hillyard area in Spokane in 1932.

Mrs. Johnson worked as a parachute rigger and riveter during World War II, and worked in automobile upholstering and custom drapery work after the war. She was also a homemaker.

Her husband died in 1973.

Survivors include a daughter, Janet Wiechmann of Victoria, British Columbia; a son, Daren Johnson of Rochester, Wash.; nine grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

Dr. Donald Riedel Worley, Idaho

No service will be held for Dr. Donald F. Riedel, 67.

Dr. Riedel, who was born in Eugene, Ore., died March 30.

He graduated from the University of Oregon School of Dentistry in 1954 and served in the Navy during the Korean War from 1954-56.

After his military service, he opened a dental practice in Pullman. He moved to Worley after retiring in 1992.

Dr. Riedel spent winters in Arizona and lived in Worley in the summer months.

Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Gwenlee; a daughter, Karen Henager; son, Alan Riedel; and granddaughter, Riann.

Estella Cook Veradale

Service for Estella M. Cook, 89, will be at 1 p.m. today at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Veradale. Burial will be Monday at Greenwood Memorial Park in San Diego.

Mrs. Cook, a former San Diego resident, died Monday.

Born in Ashton, Idaho, and raised in Ogden, Utah, Mrs. Cook lived in San Diego before moving to Spokane in 1984.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Evergreen Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Her husband of 39 years, Berlyn Cook, died in 1972.

Mrs. Cook is survived by three daughters, Marian Wagoner of Odgen, and Donna Poffenberger and Sharon Heller, both of Veradale; two sons, Berlyn and Dennis Cook, both of Rapid City, S.D.; 26 grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

Amalia ‘Molly’ Moreland Spokane

Rosary for Amalia G. “Molly” Moreland, 97, will be at 7 p.m. today at the Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Burial service is set for 10 a.m. Friday at the Holy Cross Cemetery Chapel. A funeral Mass will be held Friday at Our Lady of the Sun Roman Catholic Church in El Mirage, Ariz.

Mrs. Moreland, who was born in Romania, died Tuesday.

She was a 55-year Spokane resident and was a member of St. Francis Xavier Parish and Altar Society, the Third Order of St. Francis, Sodality of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Legion of Mary Auxiliary and the Blue Army of Our Lady of Fatima.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Cyril Moreland, in 1978.

Mrs. Moreland is survived by a daughter, Elaine Carroll of Spokane; three grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
