Dear Heloise: I let my children help with their birthday cakes. We work on the batter together, then after the layers are baked, I freeze them.

When it is time to frost the layers, I take them out of the freezer and let the kids do the frosting while the cake is still frozen. They do a pretty good job and the layers don’t break. I let the cake thaw, then cut and serve. - Kathy Herman, The Woodlands, Texas
