St. Patrick’s School Getting A Well-Deserved Face Lift

Eighty-year-old St. Patrick’s, the grandmother of North Side parochial schools, is getting a makeover.

Her outside is getting a coat of paint; her insides are getting shored up. She’s getting a new string of shrubs.

The face lift will be done Friday and Saturday by a team of Gonzaga University students young enough to be her great-grandchildren.

More than 200 are expected to pull shifts with paint can and hammer. They are part of Gonzaga’s April’s Angels program, which chooses one needy community facility a year for a two-day rehab onslaught.

“It feels good to see the difference,” said Molly Vernon, a senior history major from Ephrata who is coordinating the project. “You spend all day painting and cleaning and to stand back after the day is done, it’s great. It looks like a whole new school.”

The Hillyard neighborhood school was selected because of its need. The cafeteria needs work and paint is peeling in many places.

The volunteers plan to paint, plant trees, rebark the playground, clean walls and floors and windows, fix bathroom stalls and replace ceiling tiles.

The school will pay nothing for the work. A few St. Patrick’s parishioners will donate sweat.

“They are really going to give this school a face lift,” said Joanne Duffy, St. Patrick’s principal.

April’s Angels have previously rejuvenated Camp Dart-Lo and Trinity Elementary.

Shadle junior heads to Philadelphia

The summit, chaired by Colin Powell, is intended to celebrate volunteer service and encourage youth to become productive, happy citizens.
