WSU Overpowers Psu In Both Games

Jason Hairston and Justin Mentink each hit a pair of home runs in the opener and Wade Parrish went the distance while striking out 10 in the nightcap as the Washington State Cougars (9-33, 4-10) swept a Pacific-10 North baseball doubleheader from visiting Portland State (9-32, 2-10) by scores of 15-6 and 9-5 at Bailey Field.

Casey Kelley and Greg Mitchell each homered for WSU in the nightcap, helping the Cougars win their fourth straight game, including three from the Vikings. Parrish had not made it to the seventh inning in any of his 12 previous outings.

Travis Knight’s one-out single in the bottom of the ninth inning drove in Donnie Murrell as Gonzaga University rallied for a 6-5 win over University of San Francisco in West Coast Conference action in August/A.R.T. Stadium.

Eric Rhoades’ RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning capped a three-run rally as Yakima Valley College posted a 5-3 NWAACC win over visiting Community Colleges of Spokane.

Gavin Hare went 3-for-3 with a double and a triple for CCS.

Craig Merritt singled in Chris Gillette in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Southern Idaho an 8-7 win and a Scenic West Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader sweep over North Idaho College in Twin Falls, Idaho.

In the opener, Aaron Bond held the Cardinals scoreless through six innings and Nick Gretz ripped a two-run, fifth-inning double to propel the Golden Eagles to a 3-1 victory.

Softball

Traci Moore ran her record to 6-2 and Community Colleges of Spokane gained a split with Edmonds CC by winning the nightcap 4-3 in NWAACC action at Edmonds, Wash.

Edmonds scored two runs in the bottom of the 10th inning to top the Sasquatch 2-1 in the opener.

Moore also had a double and a pair of singles in the two games.

Tennis

Katrina Burke and Claudia Leigh sparked the sixth-seeded Idaho Vandals to a 5-4 win over the third-seeded New Mexico State Aggies in the quarterfinals of the Big West women’s championships at Ojai, Calif.

Burke and Leigh overcame a 7-3 deficit en route to a 9-7 No. 1 doubles victory over Simone Bock and Michelle Scott.

Burke, Georgina Whittem and Gwen Nikora all won singles matches for the Vandals.
