Bucs Bound For Nationals

Whitworth College won a share of the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges women’s tennis championship Sunday at Portland, earning a trip to the NAIA tournament.

Whitworth and Whitman finished with 36 points each.

Whitworth’s Tara Bonelli won the Flight B singles title. Tara Biebick and Jodi Baker won the consolation doubles. Joelle Staudinger was named All-NCIC.

The NAIA tournament will be played at Tulsa, Okla., in mid-May. The Pirates received the berth because they had swept Whitman in dual-match play.

Whitworth placed fifth behind champion Pacific Lutheran with 16 points in the NCIC men’s tournament at Forest Grove, Ore.

Whitworth’s Alan Mikkelson claimed the consolation Nos. 4-6 singles title, defeated Linh Danh of Pacific 6-3, 6-3.
