Third D.C. Policeman Shot, Killed

Associated Press

For the third time in as many months, a District of Columbia police officer was gunned down and killed over the weekend, just one block from his police station. A second officer was injured.

Robert L. Johnson Jr., 31, was pronounced dead Sunday morning at D.C. General Hospital.

Another officer, a 28-year-old sergeant, was treated and released with gunshot wounds in both feet.

Both officers were off-duty when the shooting occurred about 10:30 p.m. Saturday just one block from the 6th District police station. They were not in a police car.

Police said Sunday night they had charged Maurice Douglass, 22, with first-degree murder.

WUSA-TV said a suspect argued with officers about where they had parked. The station said the officers identified themselves, but minutes later were ambushed.
