Meyer Quits Depaul

Compiled From Wire Services

Joey Meyer resigned under fire as head basketball coach at DePaul, ending a 55-year family affair during which the Blue Demons have been coached by a Meyer.

Meyer, 48, spent 30 years at the Chicago school as a player, assistant coach and then head coach. He was a player and assistant under his father Ray, the seventh DePaul coach in 1942. Joey Meyer replaced his father when Ray retired in 1984.

While Ray Meyer - a gruff but grandfatherly type - guided the Demons to a 724-354 record, including a Final Four appearance in 1979, his son’s teams struggled in recent years. They lost their final 13 games last season to finish 3-23.

Still, Joey Meyer’s record at DePaul was a respectable 231-158.

Randy Ayers accepted a $637,353 buyout from Ohio State University, saying he “may not ever get over” his dismissal after eight seasons as head basketball coach.

Ayers was fired March 10 after a second straight 10-17 record that left him at 124-108 for his career. Former Boston College coach Jim O’Brien was hired April 2 to replace him.
