Threat From Muslims Diminishing In Turkey
Turkey’s military says its worries about an Islamic political movement have eased with the installation of a pro-secular government, newspapers reported Thursday.
“Until today, fighting radical Islam was among our duties. From now on it will only be among issues we follow out of interest,” Gen. Ismail Hakki Karadayi, the military chief of staff, told Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz on Tuesday, according to leading dailies Hurriyet and Sabah.
Turkey’s generals, who see themselves as the guarantor of the nation’s secular constitution, pressured the previous government of Necmettin Erbakan to resign in June after it resisted their demands to curb Islamization.
