Welch: No Contest

Compiled From Wire Services

Former Olympics organizer Tom Welch pleaded no contest to a charge of domestic violence, after a week of denying that he ever abused his wife. He said he took the action to help his family “find balance in which we can deal with each other.”

Welch, who spent a decade bringing the 2002 Winter Games to Salt Lake City, still contends he never roughed up his wife during a July 9 argument over his relationship with another woman. His lawyer said the plea was aimed at quickly resolving the case.

Alma Welch, who stands by everything she told police but hadn’t wanted to press charges, said she was “very pleased” with the plea.
