Chang, Woodruff Advance
Michael Chang, the top seed, and unseeded Chris Woodruff advanced to the semifinals of the du Maurier Open tennis tournament in Montreal.
Chang beat Richard Krajicek 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 to advance against French Open champion Gustavo Kuerten. He beat Fabrice Santoro of France 6-3, 7-6 (8-6). Woodruff, ranked 57th in the world, beat seventh-seeded Mark Philippoussis 6-4, 6-4 and will play Yevgeny Kafelnikov of Russia, who wore down Sweden’s Thomas Enqvist 7-5, 6-7 (7-9), 6-1.
Martina Hingis struggled before she overcame Spain’s Conchita Martinez 6-4, 6-4 in the quarterfinals of the $450,000 Toshiba Classic in Carlsbad, Calif.
