Clark Puts Cap On Rangers Rally
Will Clark’s sacrifice fly capped a three-run rally in the ninth as the Texas Rangers snapped a five-game losing streak with an 8-7 victory over the visiting Cleveland Indians on Sunday night.
Mike Jackson (2-3) hit pinch-hitter Domingo Cedeno with a pitch to open the ninth and Cedeno went to second on Jim Leyritz’ pinch single. Tom Goodwin followed with a bunt single to load the bases.
Mark McLemore hit a two-run double down the left field line to tie the game at 7.
Angels 4, White Sox 1 Anaheim, Calif.
Chuck Finley held Chicago to five hits over eight innings and Tim Salmon and Dave Hollins hit solo homers.
It was the Angels’ seventh win in their last eight games and 21st in their last 27. They have now been alone in first place in the A.L. West for three straight days for the first time since Sept. 17-19, 1995.
Orioles 7, Athletics 5 Oakland, Calif.
B.J. Surhoff drove in the tying and go-ahead runs with a sacrifice fly and double and Cal Ripken Jr. and Harold Baines homered.
The Orioles’ eighth win in nine games lifted them a season-high 30 games above .500 at 69-39. Oakland, blowing a three-run lead for the second straight day, lost for the eighth time in nine games.
Yankees 6, Twins 5 New York
Bernie Williams homered twice and drove in four runs for New York.
Williams, who returned Friday from his second stint on the disabled list this season with a strained left hamstring, has now homered in two of three games.
Royals 5, Red Sox 2 Kansas City, Mo.
Mike Macfarlane hit two of Kansas City’s four home runs.
The Royals, who connected five times Saturday, set a team record with nine home runs in two games. The previous best was seven, accomplished three times.
Tigers 5, Blue Jays 2 Detroit
Willie Blair won his seventh straight decision and Detroit sent Toronto to its eighth loss in nine games.
Blair (11-4) allowed two runs, one of them earned, and eight hits in six-plus innings. He is the first Tigers pitcher to win seven in a row since David Wells in 1995. Blair’s 11 victories are the most for a Detroit pitcher since Mike Moore also had 11 in 1994.
Clearing the bases
Orioles’ Rafael Palmeiro’s single in the fifth snapped an 0-for-19 hitless string. Still, he has 17 RBIs in 17 games. … Boston’s Reggie Jefferson extended his hitting streak to 18 games, tying a career high. … Since breaking Lou Gehrig’s consecutive-game record on Sept. 6, 1995, Cal Ripken has played in 294 straight games, which if taken by itself would constitute the third-longest active streak behind Houston’s Craig Biggio (329) and Jeff Bagwell (300). Overall, Ripken has played in 2,424 straight games.
