Gu’s Student Newspaper, Staff Receive Awards For Excellence

The Gonzaga Bulletin, GU’s student newspaper, received first place for general excellence in the college newspaper category for the Society of Professional Journalists, Inland Northwest Chapter, Excellence in Journalism Awards.

In addition, Bulletin staff members received 19 awards for journalistic excellence. The students, their categories, awards and headlines are:

Raymona Baldwin, Arts and Criticism, third, “Looff Carrousel Twists Into 21st Century.”

Ursula Pickard, Business, second, “Scholarship Scams Fleece Students.”

Susan Ganley, Education, first “Kids on Campus.”

Jennifer Wallace, Education, second, “University Denies Requests to Provide Birth Control.” Government and Politics, first, “States and Counties Experiment with Alternative Forms of Incarceration.”

Robin Moody, Education, honorable mention, “Women, Laypeople Ineligible for Dean Position.”

Kris Gilroy, Energy and Environmental Affairs, first, “GEI Teams with Artisan Ark in Recycling Effort.” Government and Politics, second, “Parking Proposal Poses Potential Problems.” Investigative Reporting, second, “I Feel Like We Live in a Police State.”

Julie Mitzel, Features, first, “I’ve Always Known I was Gay; Always, Always.” General News, second, “Students, Logan Residents Seek Solutions.”

Roger Ames, Features, third, “Graduate Student Soars to New Heights.”

Sam Francis, General Columns, first, “The Editor’s Letter, March 29;” second, “The Editor’s Letter, Feb. 9;” and honorable mention, “The Editor’s Letter, March 1.” Sports, first, “The Original Fighting Irish.”

Stefanie Weigand, Investigative Reporting, honorable mention, “GSBA Officers Complain Drinking Incident Overblown, Drawn Out.”

Greg Hayes, a spring graduate of Shadle Park High School, won an array of awards this year.

Among them are the Presidential Scholarship of $20,400 for four years; Linfield College in McMinnvile, Ore., Faculty Scholarship of $6,800 for one year; Pacific University, College Grove, Ore., Scholastic Scholarship for $8,000 for one year; Washington State University Achievement Award of $1,000, and Scholar in Residence Award of $1,000; and Washington State Honors Award.

In addition, Hayes ranks in the top 10 percent of Washington state’s graduating classes, and was a four-year member of the National Honor Society with a 3.9 grade-point average out of a perfect 4.0.

He is the son of Bill and Renee Hayes, Spokane.

Nikki Otero, was one of eight Spokane dieticians to receive an award from the Washington State Dietetics Association. Otero received the Recognized Young Dietitian of the Year award.

She is employed by Deaconess Medical Center.

Her name was incorrect in a past Achievements column.
