Donald Logan Spokane

Private memorial service for Donald S. Logan, 86, will be held. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Logan, a longtime Spokane resident, died Friday.

He graduated from West Valley High School and Washington State University, and served in the Air Force during World War II.

Mr. Logan worked as a teacher in the Seattle School District and at the University of Washington.

He moved to Spokane in 1987 after he retired.

His memberships included Sigma Epsilon fraternity, the Concordia Lodge, Scottish Rite and the El Katif Shrine.

Mr. Logan is survived by his wife of 62 years, Phyllis.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children.

Mary Thompson Spokane

Vigil service for Mary Thompson, 77, will be at 7 p.m. today at the Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Funeral Mass is planned for 10 a.m. Friday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mrs. Thompson, who was born in England, died Sunday.

She had lived in Spokane for 50 years and was a member of St. Francis Xavier Parish, the English War Brides Club and Block Watch.

She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Thompson is survived by her husband of 52 years, Dayne; three sons, Terrence and Michael Thompson, both of Spokane, and Mark Thompson of Eugene, Ore.; a daughter, Kathleen Leonard of Spokane; a brother, Michael Griffin, and two sisters, Annie Sykes and Noreen Hutchinson, all of Wigan, England; 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Ann Marie Kelly Spokane

Memorial Mass for Ann Marie Kelly, 60, will be at 4 p.m. Friday at St. Charles Catholic Church. Private inurnment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Kelly, who died Saturday, was born in Brooklyn, N.Y.

She was a social worker for the State of New York and moved to Spokane in 1967.

Survivors include four sons, John Mulligan of Federal Way, Wash., James and Kevin Mulligan, both of Spokane and Eugene Mulligan of Kent, Wash.; a daughter, Kathleen Mulligan of Arlington, Wash.; a brother, John Kelly of Brooklyn; and 10 grandchildren.

Manuel ‘Manny’ Poffenroth Spokane

Memorial service for Manuel “Manny” Poffenroth, 84, will be at 1 p.m. today at Fairmount Memorial Park. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North is in charge of arrangements and cremation.

Mr. Poffenroth, a 65-year Spokane resident, died Saturday.

He was born in Calgary, Alberta, and came to the Spokane area when he was 7.

He graduated from Endicott (Wash.) High School.

Mr. Poffenroth worked as a warehouseman for Round Up Grocery in Spokane for five years. He later worked for the Union Pacific Railroad as a carman and retired in 1976 after 33 years.

He was a member of the American Historical Society of Germans from Russia, and was one of the founders of the Spokane Railroad Credit Union and Deer Lake Property Owners Association.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Theresa; a son, Jim Poffenroth, and a daughter, Karen Ellis, both of Spokane; a sister, Marie Parker of Santa Rosa, Calif.; four grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. John-Endicott High School Athletic Program.

Raymond ‘Dan’ Bartelds Summit Valley, Wash.

Memorial service of Raymond Daniel “Dan” Bartelds, 16, will be at 9 a.m. today at Summit Valley Community Church. Private inurnment will be in Summit Valley.

Schanzenbach Funeral Home in Chewelah, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Bartelds, who was born in Chewelah, died Monday in a farming accident.

He was a student at Jenkins High School in Chewelah and achieved high honor roll status. He recently was named as a student of the month.

He played on the Chewelah Cougars football team as a receiver and defensive back.

Survivors include his parents, Ray and Sue Bartelds, and two brothers, Jesse and Jacob Bartelds, all at home.

Nina Tollefsen Spokane

Memorial service for Nina H. Tollefsen, 79, will be at 10 a.m. today at Redeemer Lutheran Church. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of the arrangements and cremation.

Born in Chewelah, Wash., Mrs. Tollefsen died Saturday.

In 1934 she married Stanley Tollefsen.

She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband.

Mrs. Tollefsen is survived by a son, Gary Tollefsen of Burien, Wash.; a daughter, Lauri Tollefsen of Spokane; a sister, Virginia Tilton of Spokane; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Robert Surles Pullman

Memorial service for Robert Leo Surles, 58, will be at 10 a.m. today at St. James Episcopal Church in Pullman. Kimball Funeral Home in Pullman is in charge of the arrangements.

Born in Los Angeles, Mr. Surles died Sunday in a skydiving accident in Springfield, Ill.

He served with Army Intelligence in Germany and later attended the University of Southern California for graduate studies.

After graduation he moved to the Northwest and was a professor for 25 years in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature at the University of Idaho.

In 1984 he married Kay Hansten.

Mr. Surles is survived by his wife; two daughters, Denise and Michelle Surles, both of San Diego; a son, David Surles of Pullman; three stepchildren, Michelle and Marty Hansten, both of Seattle, and Chris Hansten of Menlo Park, Calif.; and two brothers, Sam Surles of Arizona and Barry Surles of Kauai, Hawaii.

Larry Ramsey Spokane

Memorial service for Larry J. Ramsey, 42, will be at 7 p.m. today at the Valley Fourth Memorial Church. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Born in Coeur d’Alene, Mr. Ramsey died Monday.

He was a graduate of Central Valley High School and served in the Navy.

He later worked for Ziegler Building Center as a salesman.

Mr. Ramsey is survived by his mother, Betty Ramsey of Spokane; a brother, David Ramsey of Spokane; and four sisters, Mary Branda, Robin Ramsey and Becky Avery, all of Spokane, and Dawn Finley of Topeka, Kan.

Howard Michael Spokane

No service will be held for Howard D. Michael, 86, at his request. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Michael, who was born in Roseburg, Ore., died Tuesday.

He served in the Army during World War II and married Yvette Humbert in France.

After the war he moved to Spokane and farmed for many years in Otis Orchards.

Survivors include; two daughters, Yvonne Pritchard of Alaska and Monique York of Newcastle, Wash.; a son, Mark Michael of Florida; four sisters, Ida Bohn, Helen Rhodes, Edna Howell and Vivian Burgard, all of Spokane; a brother, Kenneth Michael of Spokane; and five grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Veterans Administration Medical Center.

Elmer Davis Ephrata, Wash.

Memorial service for Elmer J. Davis, 81, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Nicoles Funeral Home in Ephrata. Burial will be at a later date in Newport, Wash.

Mr. Davis, who was born in Usk, Wash., died Saturday.

He was a graduate of Cusick (Wash.) High School and Washington State College.

Mr. Davis worked for the USDA’s Farm Security Administration in Ellensburg.

In 1941 he married Gladys Jones and they returned to Pend Oreille County, where they operated a dairy and beef cattle ranch until 1957.

He then returned to federal service with the Farmers Home Administration in Wenatchee, and in 1958 transferred to Ephrata where he served as county supervisor for FmHA. He later served in the position of district director for the same agency and supervised UDSA farm lending programs for much of Eastern Washington. He retired in 1978.

His first wife, Gladys, died in 1984.

In 1989 he married Dora Ream of Ephrata.

Mr. Davis was a member of the Elks Lodge No. 1816.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Donald and Ben Davis, both of Ephrata; a daughter, Susan Bryan of Colorado Springs; a stepdaughter, Madeline Taylor of Ephrata; his twin brother, George Davis of Spokane; six grandchildren and two stepgrandchildren.

Kathleen Bloom Spokane

Visitation for Kathleen M. Bloom, a lifetime Spokane resident, will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday at the Riplinger Funeral Home. Service will follow at 2 p.m. Burial will be at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mrs. Bloom, who died Sunday, was 74.

She graduated from high school in Pierce, Idaho, and married Robert Bloom in 1939. They settled in Spokane and Mrs. Bloom worked for J.C. Penney as a clerk and was also a homemaker.

She was a member of Emmanuel Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Geraldine Wolf of Lynden, Wash.; a son, Gerald Bloom of Richland; two sisters, Peggy Fadden of Redmond, Wash., and Pat Hinkley of Rice, Texas; a brother, Jim Dundas of Hamilton, Mont.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
