Chang Gets Revenge

Michael Chang, the No. 2 player on the ATP Tour and the tournament’s second seed, defeated the man who ousted him a week ago, Gustavo Kuerten, 6-1, 6-2 in the quarterfinals of the $2.3 million ATP Championship in Mason, Ohio.

Earlier, top-seeded Pete Sampras beat No. 7 Yevgeny Kafelnikov of Russia 6-2, 6-2 in 53 minutes.

Thomas Muster of Austria needed 2 hours 43 minutes to defeat Jan Siemerink of the Netherlands 6-7 (1-7), 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-5). Albert Costa was leading 4-6, 6-3, 5-2 when Sergi Bruguera was forced to retire.

Amy Frazier, an early-round loser in nine of the 13 tournaments she’s played this year, surprised fifth seed Arantxa Sanchez Vicario 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 to advance to today’s semifinals of the Acura Classic in Manhattan Beach, Calif.

No. 4 seed and defending champion Lindsay Davenport got by Nathalie Tauziat of France 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 and will play top seed Martina Hingis today. Hingis defeated sixth seed Anke Huber 6-3, 6-0. Frazier will play No. 2 seed Monica Seles in the other semifinal.
