A lot more than climate and landscape separate Spokane and Seattle. “The Great Divide,” a special series of articles the past two Sundays and Mondays in The Spokesman-Review, documented a huge disparity in the economic conditions of the two cities.

To follow up on those articles, the newspaper asked eight Spokane-area residents to write about the impact those conditions have on areas of community life in which these writers are involved.

Here, then, are eight first-person reactions to “The Great Divide” as it relates to business, labor, education, neighborhoods, local government, the arts, human rights and social services.
