Big-City Mayors Have To Hide Affairs In Plain Sight

Compiled By Staff Writer Dan Web

It’s a surprise to many across the nation, but a report that New York mayor Rudolph Giuliani may be having marital difficulties doesn’t exactly shock Big Apple news types.

Which in itself might be a big problem.

In a piece written by Jennet Conant, Vanity Fair alleges that Giuliani’s marriage to Donna Hanover is over. Furthermore, his honor may have been having an affair with his communications director, Cristyne Lategano.

The Post, Daily News, Newsday and Times all did reaction pieces, quoting Giuliani’s response to the article - which used unnamed sources - and little else.

“It is the story that every New York reporter believes but few have dared to hint at in print,” wrote Washington Post media columnist Howard Kurtz.

Loose talk

Comic Jeff Foxworthy on his favorite subject: “You know you’re a redneck if your house doesn’t have curtains but your truck does.”

Over in Seattle, he gets hugged a lot

Sir Mix-A-Lot turns 34 today.

To Cindy, Madonna is nothing more than fair game

You’d think that prancing down a catwalk would be a frightening experience. Or being pursued by a jillion paparazzi. But none of this scared supermodel Cindy Crawford as much as… “Madonna, she scares me,” Crawford told Craig Kilborn of “The Daily Show.” Her fears started “with the pointy bras and it got worse from there.”

Salma is something more than a mere material girl

Speaking of Madonna, her attempt to film the life of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo is being upstaged by actress Salma Hayek. Trimark will produce the movie, which will raise funds for Mexican art scholarships. “I’m giving it every penny I make on this film,” Hayek says.

But less than half as much as Greg Maddux

Ted Turner was happy to do a cameo for the HBO show “Arli$$.” Robert Wuhl reported his reaction. “He said, ‘Hot damn! I get $500? For one hour? That’s more than a psychiatrist makes.”’

It’s OK, you know, because mourning becomes Electra

Blonds apparently do have more… success. Since taking over for Jenny McCarthy on the MTV program “Singled Out,” brown-haired Carmen Electra has watched the show’s rating plummet. Word is that Electra may be out of a job.

Time for a remake of ‘King of Hearts’

According to Robert Altman, he has been fired as director of the forthcoming film “The Gingerbread Man.” According to Polygram, it just isn’t true. Whatever, the film, an original script by John Grisham starring Kenneth Branagh, Robert Downey Jr. and Robert Duvall, didn’t fare well when it was test-screened in a Los Angeles mall. To Altman, that means “the inmates are running the asylum.”
