Raines Has Four Hits As Yanks Top Royals

Associated Press

American League

Tim Raines, in his second game back from the disabled list, capped a four-hit night with a go-ahead, two-run double in the seventh inning Thursday night to lead the New York Yankees to a 10-5 victory over the visiting Kansas City Royals on Thursday night

David Wells (14-5) won his fourth straight start, striking out seven in 7-1/3 innings as the Yankees won for the fifth time in six games.

Tino Martinez drove in four runs, raising his league-leading total to 113, but the victory also came with a cost as second baseman Luis Sojo, hitting .307, had his left wrist fractured when he was hit by a pitch thrown by Kansas City’s Ricky Bones.

Indians 12, Tigers 1

Cleveland

Charles Nagy pitched like an ace and got home runs from Manny Ramirez, Jim Thome, Sandy Alomar and David Justice as Cleveland beat Detroit.

The Indians, trying to shake a slump, build momentum and stay in first place in the A.L. Central, won their first series since Aug. 1-3 at Texas. The two-time defending division champs are still only 11-18 since July 18.

Ramirez shrugged off criticism about a bonehead base-running play in Wednesday’s first game with three hits, including his 19th homer, two RBIs and two outstanding catches in the outfield. After he made it 4-1 with an RBI single in the seventh, Thome hit his 31st homer and first since Aug. 4, and Alomar added his career-high 16th two batters later.

Red Sox 6, Twins 1

Boston

John Valentin’s bases-loaded triple highlighted a five-run eighth inning that led Boston past Minnesota.

The Twins suffered their sixth straight loss and ninth in 10 games.

Angels 5, Brewers 1

Milwaukee

Todd Greene hit a three-run homer and Dennis Springer pitched a six-hitter as Anaheim snapped a three-game losing streak with its victory over Milwaukee.

Jack Howell added a homer as the Angels moved into a tie for first in the A.L. West with Seattle.

Athletics 12, White Sox 5

Chicago

Jason Giambi and Matt Stairs each hit two-run homers and RBI doubles as Oakland snapped Chicago’s four-game winning streak.

Clearing the bases

Darryl Strawberry, hours before he was recalled by the Yankees, had two homers and seven RBIs to lead Columbus to a 13-3 rout of Richmond… . Frank Thomas hit his 250th career home run for Chicago… . Carlton Fisk, who was unceremoniously dumped by the Chicago White Sox in 1993, will have his No. 72 retired by the team on Sept. 14… . Kansas City infielders Jose Offerman and David Howard were placed on the 15-day disabled list, giving the Royals eight players on the DL.
