Several WSU Students Recognized For Service

Compiled By Tina Carey

Washington State University’s chapter of Mortar Board senior honor society elected 21 students to its organization. The group recognizes superior scholarship, leadership and service to the university and the community.

Five Inland Northwest students were among the newly elected members:

Cara Preuss, Mead; Jeremy Green, Newport, Wash.; Kathleen Law and Alexis Madison, both of Pullman; and Shelley Gross, Spokane.

Paul Komarek, son of Deloris Komarek of Spokane, received a 1997 Outstanding Graduate Award for Mathematics from Western Washington University.

Michael Mykines, agricultural credit specialist with Farm Service Agency in Spokane, has graduated from the Western Agricultural Credit School at Washington State University.

Three Inland Northwest students attending the University of Oklahoma were named to the Honor Roll for the spring semester: Catherine Skadan, Liberty Lake; and Richard Richmond II and Curtis Schultz, both of Veradale.

Erin Feltman, a seventh-grade student at St. George’s, was one of 50 students nationwide to earn a perfect score in the Blue Division of the WordMasters Challenge.

WordMasters Challenge is an exercise in critical thinking which encourages students to become familiar with a set of new words considerably more difficult than their grade level. The students are then required to use the words to complete analogies, expressing various kinds of logical relationships.

Other St. George students to achieve outstanding results were Julie Witherspoon, Chris Grubb, Sarah Hulse, Aleksandr Kirillov, Pat Thomas, Ryan Wickre, Erin Malm and Courtney Collins.

Dan Short, a graduate of Gonzaga Prep, won a position on the Western Washington University cheerleading squad for the 1997-98 sports season.
