Teens’ Help Needed For Youth Conference

You’re wanted.

That’s right. Spokane-area teens are needed to help plan and stage a daylong youth conference Oct. 10.

A planning meeting is scheduled for Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Spokane Cooperative Extension, 222 N. Havana, next to the Interstate Fairgrounds.

The Oct. 10 conference will be the first of several events that will take place in Spokane over the next three years as an outgrowth of the President’s Summit on America’s Future. The summit was held in April in Philadelphia to find out what young people require to have “the confidence, character, competence and connections needed to live a healthy, fulfilling life and contribute positively to society.”

The group identified five resources vital to a young person’s future:

Ongoing relationships with caring adults.

Safe places and structured activities.

A healthy start for a healthy future.

Marketable skills through effective education.

Opportunities to serve.

Spokane’s 10-member delegation to the summit is charged with bringing this program back to the area and rallying the community toward these goals.

The delegation included a junior from Shadle Park High School and a senior from Gonzaga University, but the planning efforts cannot be successful without broad participation and leadership by teens in the community.
