Mavs Reward Strickland

Compiled From Wire Services

Erick Strickland played only 28 NBA games, but he impressed the Dallas Mavericks enough during the second half of last season that they signed him to a six-year deal worth almost $15 million.

The team did not disclose the amount of Strickland’s contract, but the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, citing NBA sources, reported the deal was worth $14.4 million.

Strickland, set to be the Mavericks’ starting shooting guard, wasn’t selected in last year’s NBA draft, and the Mavericks signed him as a free agent. After being hampered by a preseason shoulder injury, Strickland was waived by Dallas and spent two months in the Continental Basketball Association.

Dallas signed Strickland to a 10-day contract Feb. 15, and his hustle immediately made him a favorite of general manager Don Nelson.

Former NBA All-Star Alvin Robertson was sentenced to a year in jail in San Antonio after pleading no contest to four misdemeanor charges stemming from confrontations with his ex-girlfriend.
