Ireland’s Michelle de Bruin - formerly Michelle Smith - won gold in the 400-meter individual medley in the European Swimming Championships, her first big race since collecting three Olympic gold medals a year ago.

De Bruin, 27, who has raced little since Atlanta and had no qualifying time in this event, clocked an impressive 4 minutes, 42.08 seconds, the best time in Europe this season.
