Historic Preservation Will Be Topic

Much of the history of the Spokane area is found inside the city limits.

But county officials want to make sure historic sites and buildings in the unincorporated areas are preserved as well. They are holding two workshops today at the Argonne Library, 4322 N. Argonne, to gather public comment on historic preservation efforts.

The workshops will be from noon to 2 p.m. and from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Displays will show historical preservation surveys by the county Public Works staff and Washington State University researchers.

“We feel it’s important to realize the value of historic sites,” said Tim Lawhead, a long-range planner for the county. “If we don’t pay attention to these valuable sites, they will be torn down and lost forever.”

The state’s Growth Management Act requires counties to consider historic preservation in comprehensive planning.

Staff members from the city-county Historic Preservation Office will be on hand to answer questions.
