Mariners Get Left Fielder Kelly From Twins

Associated Press

The Seattle Mariners, who traded away prized left fielder Jose Cruz Jr. three weeks ago for bullpen help, acquired outfielder Roberto Kelly from the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday night for a player to be named.

Kelly, 32, was batting .287 with five home runs and 37 RBIs in 75 games for the Twins. He will join the Mariners today for a game against Cleveland.

Kelly will be playing for his seventh major league team. Since playing for the New York Yankees in 1992, he has played for Cincinnati, Atlanta, Montreal and Los Angeles and Minnesota.

Since Cruz was traded to the Blue Jays on July 31, Seattle has been platooning players in left.

In his career, Kelly has a .288 average, 92 homers, 479 RBIs and 227 stolen bases.
