Goran Ivanisevic of Croatia, ranked No. 4 in the world, struggled to a 5-7, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) victory over No. 95 Nicolas Lapentti, a qualifier from Ecuador, to gain the quarterfinals of the Hamlet Cup tennis tournament in Commack, N.Y.

Top-seeded Michael Chang, No. 2 in the world, needed only 49 minutes to boost his record for the year to 49-12 with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Todd Woodbridge.

In other matches, Marc-Kevin Goellner of Germany used 17 aces to beat fourth-seeded French Open champion Gustavo Kuerten of Brazil 6-3, 7-6 (7-3).

Patrick Rafter beat Bohdan Ulihrach of the Czech Republic 7-5, 7-5 and fifth-seeded Carlos Moya of Spain was leading, 6-2, 3-1 when Marc Rosset of Switzerland retired because of tendinitis in his left knee.

Also, Richey Reneberg defeated Arnaud Boetsch of France 6-4, 6-1 and sixth-seeded Thomas Enqvist of Sweden beat Cedric Pioline of France.

Fifth-seeded Amanda Coetzer upset top-seeded Jana Novotna 1-6, 6-3, 6-1 to join No. 3 Iva Majoli and No. 4 Lindsay Davenport in the semifinals of the $450,000 U.S. Women’s Hardcourt Championships in Stone Mountain, Ga.

A worn-out Monica Seles, the second seed, withdrew from the event due to illness.

Majoli, of Croatia, outlasted hard-serving Brenda Schultz-McCarthy of the Netherlands 6-2, 7-5, while Davenport overcame swirling winds to beat hard-hitting Dominique Van Roost of Belgium 6-1, 7-5.

Seles was unable to take the court against Sandrine Testud of France because of a high fever and throat virus.

Today’s semifinals will have Majoli against Testud and Davenport against Coetzer.
