Man Charged After Stabbing At Bar

From Staff And Wire Reports

A Seattle man has been charged with second-degree murder in the stabbing death of an Oregon man at a Des Moines bar.

Prosecutors said the suspect, Salvator Montoya, 20, laughed, smiled and blew kisses while watching paramedics try to revive the victim, identified as Brian Steven Hart, 25, of Lake Oswego, Ore.

Montoya also is charged with first-degree assault on a bartender, Peter Schalow, who was stabbed in the chest and abdomen.

Prosecutors gave this account: Hart and his wife, Amy, had come to the Puget Sound area to attend a family get-together and a wedding.

They went to the Yardarm Pub with a dozen friends after the wedding. Montoya also was in the pub, with three other friends.

At closing time, two men in Montoya’s group approached two women in Hart’s group and asked whether they wanted to party.

When the women and their husbands told the men they were married, the pair backed off. But Montoya then approached Brian Hart, and appeared angry.

A melee between the two groups broke out, during which Montoya allegedly stabbed Hart and Schalow.

After police arrested Montoya and put him in a patrol car, he allegedly laughed, smiled and blew kisses at Hart’s friends, prosecutors said.

Montoya is to be arraigned Monday. Prosecutors have requested $500,000 bail.
