A steady Russian team defeated the United States for the gold medal in women’s gymnastics in the World University Games in Catania, Sicily.

South Shore of Staten Island, N.Y., won twice in the losers bracket of the Babe Ruth World Series in Clifton Park, N.Y. to earn the right to play undefeated Oakland, Calif., in today’s tournament championship. South Shore earlier eliminated Port Angeles, Wash., 6-1.

Oft-troubled jockey Patrick Valenzuela received a five-day suspension from Del Mar (Calif.) stewards for violating rules on being excused from mounts. He called the stewards about 2:30 p.m. Thursday, saying he wouldn’t be riding that day, but had already missed his mount in the first race.

A federal judge in New York dismissed an indictment against Don King Productions Inc. in a case alleging the boxing promoter cheated Lloyds of London. The ruling means that only King, and not his corporation, can be tried on the fraud charges.

Recommendations stemming from two investigations into the spending habits of Utah State University’s athletic director will be reviewed by a special school panel.

Meantime, Chuck Bell has met with the campus controllers office and intends to repay USU $1,000 in expense account spending deemed improper by investigators.

The eligibility of UCLA freshmen basketball players Schea Cotton and Baron Davis will not be affected by their purchase of Ford Explorers, according to the NCAA’s enforcement director.
