Triple Olympic gold medalist Michelle Smith finished the European Swimming Championships with two gold and two silver medals, taking her second silver in the 200-meter butterfly behind 19-year-old Spaniard Maria Pelaez in Seville, Spain.

Pelaez clocked a European-best time this season of 2 minutes, 10.25 seconds. Smith finished in 2:10.88.

Smith also said she will file libel lawsuits in the next few weeks against three Irish newspapers and one British paper - and is reviewing a possible suit against the Chicago Sun-Times due to allegations of drug use.

“I stand behind my performances and my training and if people have defamed me I want to stand up for my name and reputation,” Smith said

The Czech Republic was eliminated from qualifying for soccer’s 1998 World Cup, losing to host Slovakia 2-1 in Bratislava in their first matchup since the nations split four years ago.

Spain (6-0-2) leads Europe Group Six with 20 points, one ahead of Yugoslavia (6-1-1) and four ahead of Slovakia (5-2). The top team will qualify for next summer’s tournament in France, while the second-place team will either qualify or advance to a playoff for a berth.
