Fifth-seeded Carlos Moya of Spain defeated eighth-seeded Patrick Rafter of Australia 6-4, 7-6 (7-1) to win the $330,000 Hamlet Cup in Commack, N.Y., his first ATP Tour victory of the year.

Both played with sore right shoulders as Moya won for the first time this year after losing four previous finals appearances. He improved his record to a career-best 47-20, 23-7 on hardcourts. Rafter, winless in five finals this year, is 0-3 against Moya, losing all three matches in tiebreakers.

Unseeded Sjeng Schalken of the Netherlands capped a week of upsets by defeating second-seeded Marcelo Rios of Chile 7-5, 6-3 to win the MFS Pro Championships in Brookline, Mass.

Schalken, who considered withdrawing before the tournament because of knee problems, ousted top-seeded Alex Corretja of Spain in the quarterfinals on the way to his victory Sunday over Rios.

“This was the best week of my career,” said Schalken, who was ranked 79th by the ATP before the tournament. “I served well today because I couldn’t allow him to dictate the pace.”
