Eugene Mancini Re-Elected President Of Sons Of Italy

Eugene Mancini, a member of Spokane’s American-Italian Lodge 2172, was elected to a second term as president of the Northwest Grand Lodge of the Sons of Italy in America.

Mancini will preside over groups in Washington, Idaho, Oregon and western Montana.

Daniela Paparella, a junior at Gonzaga University, received the Tony Perry scholarship from The American-Italian Lodge of Spokane.

Paparella, a graduate of Rogers High School, is majoring in English at GU.

William Beatty has been commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant through the Air Force ROTC program after earning a bachelor’s degree at Central Washington University. He is the son of William and Isabel Beatty and a 1993 graduate of Lewis and Clark High School.

Eight Spokane students graduated this spring from Creighton University in Omaha, Neb. The students and their degrees are:

Mark Daspit, juris doctorate; Chad Devore, doctor of dental surgery; Matthew Frazier, bachelor of arts (cum laude); Frederick Hay, juris doctorate; Paul Larsen, doctor of medicine; Joleen Meekin, doctor of medicine; Traci Miller, doctor of medicine; and Marc Weiand, doctor of dental surgery.

Stephen McDaniel, a Spokane resident, received a Union Pacific Scholarship from the University of Wyoming in Laramie, Wyo., to study chemical engineering.

Air National Guard Airman Christine Patterson, daughter of Tom and Jean Patterson, Nine Mile Falls, graduated from the financial management apprentice course at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas.

Shannon Moffit, of Spokane, received a B.A. in elementary education from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

Kristi Carpenter, a Mead High School graduate, received a Fulbright Scholarship to study in Chile this summer.

She will study the social, economic, political, historical and cultural aspects of Chili’s transition to democracy.

Carpenter now lives in Seattle and teaches in Kent.

Army National Guard Staff Sgt. Todd Smith was named Noncommissioned Officer of the Year for the 5th U.S. Army, Army National Guard. In addition, he received the Meritorious Service Medal for outstanding non-combat meritorious achievement in service to the United States.

Smith is stationed at Camp George West in Golden, Colo.

Smith, a 1985 graduate of Lewis and Clark High School, is the son of Dale Smith.

Army Pvt. Kevin Beiers graduated from the heavy-wheel vehicle mechanic course at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. He is the son of Keith Beiers and a 1995 graduate of Mead High School.
