Dollar Rises Against Yen

The dollar hit a 5-1/2 year intraday high against the Japanese yen Thursday after disappointing figures were released on Japan’s economic prospects.

The dollar ended slightly lower against the German mark after drifting south as U.S. stocks sold off in late trading. The dollar ended higher against other leading currencies.

“The dollar is the place to be. It’s a safe haven still,” said Elena Shperling, chief trader at Banco di Sicilia in New York.
