Fun in the snow

There’s no lack of snow in the high country of western Montana, so the region will again host a wide variety of wintery activities.

Next weekend - Dec. 13-14 - the annual Sled Dog Race to the Lake will be run between Holland and Seeley lakes, north of Missoula.

In January there will be the TransMontana Snowmobile Ride (Jan. 18-23) and the Western Montana Wine Festival in Missoula (Jan. 31)

Other winter activities include a Winter Carnival in Whitefish, Mont., (Feb. 6-8), the U.S. Telemark Skiing National Championship at The Big Mountain (Feb. 28-March 1) and the fourth annual Montana Storytelling Round-Up (April 17-18).

For detailed information about these and other events, call for a free Glacier Country Travel Guide, (800) 338-5072. As usual, call ahead before leaving for an event as some activities are weather-dependent.

Run with the wolves

You don’t have to be a woman to run with the wolves at the Audubon Center of the North Woods in Minnesota.

The center will have a Wolf Ecology Workshop Jan. 31-Feb. 7, which includes study of wolf behavior and an opportunity to fly with biologists over radio-collared wolves.

In addition, during the week participants will cross-country ski or snowshoe into wolf habitat to help collect track, sign and prey information. There will be opportunities to take dogsled rides and go skijoring (the well-trained dog teams pull cross-country skiers).

Lodging is at the Silver Rapids Lodge in Ely, Minn., at the gateway of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Cost of the week-long workshop is $1,050, which includes lodging, some meals, the airflight over the wolf packs and transportation to and from the airport in Duluth, Minn. For information, call the Audubon Center of the North Woods, (320) 245-2648.
