The Fall Of Communism

The Estonian city of Tartu had high hopes of selling its statue of Vladimir Lenin, but an auction drew no bidders for the bronze monument to the leader of the Bolshevik Revolution. Officials had set a starting price of $14,000, but the city now must decide whether to try to sell the 11-foot statue at a lower price or barter the bronze for scrap, reports said. Since the Soviet collapse in 1991, many statues of leaders have come down, leaving cities to figure out what to do with the toppled monuments.
