Claudia Pechstein of Germany set a world record in winning a women’s 3,000-meter speedskating World Cup competition in Hamar, Norway. Pechstein was timed in 4 minutes, 7.13 seconds, 0.63 seconds faster than the record set by teammate Gunda Niemann-Stirnemann last weekend.

The men’s downhill was postponed to next Friday and moved to Val Gardena, Italy, after fog wiped out World Cup skiing in Val d’Isere, France. Only one race, a women’s giant slalom, remains at Val D’Isere this weekend.

Roseli volleyed a bouncing ball in the 20th minute for the only score, giving Brazil a 1-0 soccer victory over the U.S. women’s national team in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Oregon State is not renewing Tom Rowney’s contract as women’s soccer coach, athletic officials announced. In six years at OSU, Rowney had a 54-54-3 record.

Dr. Ernst Jokl, 90, a founder of sports medicine in the U.S. and an international authority in the medical aspects of sports, died Saturday at St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington, Ky.

Britain’s Henry Akiwande remained in heavyweight contention with a unanimous 12-round decision over American Orlin Norris in Pompano Beach, Fla.
