Maggert’s Putt Wins

Associated Press

Jeff Maggert sank a four-foot birdie putt to win the $220,000 first prize with partner Steve Elkington in the $2.1 million Diners Club matches on Sunday at La Quinta, Calif.

Maggert and Elkington defeated two-time defending champions Tom Lehman and Duffy Waldorf, 2 and 1.

Gil Morgan and Jay Sigel built a two-hole lead and then hung on to defeat Bob Eastwood and Walter Morgan 1-up in the Senior PGA portion of the Diners Club matches.

Sigel’s eagle three at the par-5, 503-yard 8th hole broke the tie and put Sigel and Gil Morgan on top for good.

Defending champions Juli Inkster and Dottie Pepper defeated Nancy Lopez and Laura Davies 3-and-2 to capture the LPGA’s portion of the matches and earn $110,000 each.
