In Val d’Isere, France, Hermann Maier became the first World Cup race winner to be disqualified for stopping too soon after the finish to display his skis.

In Chiang Mai, Thailand, Russia’s Andrei Chemerkin broke two world records at the World Weightlifting Championships. He broke the marks in the clean and jerk for the over 238-pound class with 578 pounds, and his winning total of 1,020 pounds.

American Wes Barnett won a silver and a bronze.
