Associated Press

College basketball

Freshman reserve guard Marvin O’Connor hit two big 3-pointers, his only field goals of the second half, to hold off a rally by No. 16 Temple and Villanova pulled away for a 68-57 victory over the Owls on Tuesday night in Villanova, Pa.

The Wildcats (3-4), who had lost their last two games, led by as many as 13 points early in the second half, minutes after Temple coach John Chaney was ejected after being assessed two technical fouls.

The Owls (6-2), who had won four straight, used some pressure defense to force turnovers and get back into the game.

Temple used a 16-6 run to get within 49-46 with 5:54 to play. Thirteen seconds later, O’Connor hit the first of his two 3-pointers. Lamont Barnes had Temple back within four points on a dunk with 4:58 left, but O’Connor’s second 3 made it 55-48 with 4:43 to play.

At Chapel Hill, N.C., Antawn Jamison and Vince Carter proved too tough inside as the Tar Heels (11-0) had little trouble downing the Pirates (4-4) in their first game in three seasons as the top-ranked team.

Jamison, coming off a six-point game Saturday night against Princeton, scored 18 of his season-high 28 points in the first half. Carter hit seven of his first eight shots to finish with 16.

(9) Stanford 63, San Diego St. 42

Kris Weems scored 11 points and Mark Madsen had 10 rebounds as the Cardinal, looking lethargic in its first game in 10 days, beat the Aztecs in San Diego.

Stanford (6-0) had been idle since beating No. 20 Georgia 76-74 at the Wooden Classic in Anaheim on Dec. 16. Both Stanford and San Diego State (3-5) set season-lows in scoring.

Oregon St 73, St. Martin’s 61

Corey Benjamin and Iyan Walker scored 13 points apiece to help the Beavers overcome a sluggish second-half effort and beat the Saints in Corvallis, Ore.

The Beavers (6-1), who face No. 6 Utah in Portland on Saturday, needed a 17-2 second-half run to pull away from the Division II Saints (2-6).

St Mary’s 73, Fresno St. 65

At Fresno, Calif., David Sivulich scored 22 points as the Gaels (5-2) handed the highly touted Bulldogs (3-4) their fourth-straight defeat.

The Gaels won their fourth in the last five games, thanks largely to 15 3-pointers spread among five players.

Loyola Marymount 88, Portland St. 84 (OT)

Haywood Eaddy scored nine of his 22 points in overtime to rally the Lions (2-6) to victory over the Vikings (5-2).

New Mexico St. 61, Ark.-Pine Bluff 53

At Las Cruces, N.M., Louis Richardson scored 21 points and the Aggies (5-3) scored 12 straight points midway through the second half to beat the Golden Lions (1-9).
