Sandpoint Man Wins
Sandpoint, Idaho, native Anton Pogue, of Hood River, Ore., won the giant slalom qualifier of the U.S. Snowboard Grand Prix at Carrabassett Valley, Maine, the first in a series of events to help choose the U.S. team for the first-time Olympic competition.
Picabo Street returned to World Cup racing and her coach was “ecstatic” over her performance. America’s best skier finished 10th in a downhill race at Val d’Isere, France, in her first start in more than a year following major knee surgery. Katja Seizinger of Germany won the event for her fifth consecutive victory.
At Piancavallo, Italy, former world aerials champion Nikki Stone of Westborough, Mass., overcame light snow to post her third World Cup victory of the season. In the men’s event, Andy Capicik led a 1-2-3 sweep by Canadians as he earned his first World Cup win since January 1993.
