Walla Walla Cc Drops Football

Walla Walla Community College has dropped its football program, the last community college team in the state.

The school’s Board of Trustees voted 3-1 on Wednesday to accept President Steve VanAusdle’s recommendation to end the program.

Walla Walla had been operating as a football independent since 1990, competing against two-year schools from Idaho, Utah and California and four-year junior varsity teams.

A special committee was directed by VanAusdle last spring to assess the program in the wake of two separate Tacoma murders in which WWCC players were arrested and charged.

The committee concluded that the murders in Tacoma did not reflect on the football team.

But the Football Study Committee recommended that the sport be dropped because it was not making a positive contribution to the educational mission of the college, had scheduling problems, inadequate supervision of student-athlete behavior, and low attendance.
