Police Warn Of Phone Scams

From Staff And Wire Reports

Police are alerting residents about two telephone scams that have surfaced in Spokane.

In the first, a caller says he’s representing the Spokane Police Department and is collecting money for needy families.

The department never solicits money by phone, police said.

The second scam was discovered when a Spokane woman was asked to accept a collect call from someone with her same last name, police said.

The woman accepted the call, and then was told her phone line had to be blocked. She was asked for her AT&T calling card number, police said.

The woman gave out her number and the caller hung up, police said.

Police warn anyone who receives a call asking for credit card or bank account information to hang up and report the call to Crime Check at 456-2233.
