Hints From Heloise

King Features Syndicate

Dear Heloise: When a recipe calls for sharp flavored cheese, a mild cheese may be substituted by clever use of seasonings. Add a little dry mustard, some pepper and a dash of Worcestershire sauce. Even experts will never guess your secret. Ruby L. Williams, Texarkana, Texas

Dear Heloise: I didn’t own a toothpick holder, so I improvised. I washed out a spice bottle with a cap of sizable holes for sprinkling. This is ideal for storing toothpicks. They are visible through the glass and are kept secure with the original lid. Now when I need a toothpick, I just remove the lid and shake. Anna Nolan, Erie, Pa.

They do make great toothpick holders! You can also use narrow-necked hot-sauce bottles. - Heloise

Dear Heloise: Give sons and daughters away at college your address labels for their letters to Mom and Dad. It’s also a good idea for your relatives and friends who have a problem writing (add a book of stamps). - Ilene Bauer, Bexley, Ohio
