Spring Bracelets Are Simple, Cheap And Very Versatile

Shanna Southern Peterson Correspondent

Being fashion forward and living in the Inland Northwest is considered by many to be the ultimate oxymoron. Sometimes it seems we don’t hear about a new fad until it’s old news everywhere else.

But here’s a fashion tip you may want to pay attention to for a number of reasons: It’s the hottest rage on the runways of Paris and Milan for next season, it’s inexpensive, and it can be worn by just about anyone.

The basis for this fashion fad can be traced to the Masai tribes of Africa. There, women wear similar looking bangles to indicate wealth and social standing. Fashion designers in Italy picked up on this simple embellishment and turned it into the latest craze to come out of Europe.

Molla (Italian for spring) bracelets are the latest craze to hit the fashion world. These Slinky-like bracelets in metal finishes or primary and pastel colors are expected to by the biggest thing in accessories this decade. They are slim stainless-steel spring bracelets that can update an outfit and show off your fashion savvy. The key to wearing them with the right flair is to wear a bunch, usually 25 to 100 at a time.

One of the most attractive aspects of this fashion frenzy is the cost. Retailers are selling these must-have bangles for less than a dollar each. That means you can have an assortment without putting too big a dent in the checking account. They are usually priced starting at about $10 per dozen.

Another plus for molla is that they are smooth and flexible. When you wear them, you won’t have that stiff, noisy, clanky look you get from traditional metal bangle bracelets.

Kelly Elwell, buyer for Rings and Things on the skywalk level downtown, said she thinks these will be a hot item with everyone from little girls to businesswomen as soon as people see how you can change the look by changing the color combinations or number of bracelets you wear.

It’s not just women who find these to be an attractive accessory. Men are discovering that because the molla bracelets can expand to just about any wrist size, they can wear them, too.

As the trend develops, look for charms and trinkets to be added for a statement as individual as the person wearing them. This is easily done by unscrewing the ends, slipping on a bead or two and fastening the ends together again. When you change your outfit, you can change the look of the bracelets by adding different baubles.

At the moment, they are somewhat difficult to find in this area. Rings and Things carries both the stainless and gold finish bracelets. You can also find them at Claires in the NorthTown mall.

Before too long we should see more retailers stocking them in a variety of colors. So if you’re looking for a cutting-edge fashion idea for that clothes maven in your life, give him or her a handful of molla bangles.

Cheap chic. Just the ticket for the fashion forward on a budget.
