Late Goal Deals Loss To Usa

A goal by Maxim Balmochnykh with 41 seconds left gave Russia a 3-2 victory over the United States in the World Junior Ice Hockey Championships on Sunday.

For the second night in a row, Russia grabbed a point with a last-minute goal. On Saturday, a goal 37 seconds from the end gave the Russians a tie against Switzerland.

Against Russia, Team USA evened the score twice while playing four skaters against four. Jeff Farkas scored at 13:18 of the first period for a 1-1 tie, and Brian Gionta made it 2-2 at 11:35 in the last period.

In another game, Canada took its first win of the tournament with a 5-0 decision over the Czech Republic. Josh Holden scored two goals, and Brett McLean and Alex Tanguay each had a goal and an assist. Matthieu Garon turned away 22 shots behind a very solid defense.

In other games, Finland, leading Group A with a 3-0-0 record, beat Sweden 4-3, coming from behind to win on Jyrki Louhi’s goal at 12:28 of the last period, and Kazakhstan beat Slovakia 5-2.

The Czech Republic is 2-1-0, Sweden and Canada are 1-2-0 and Germany is 0-2-0. The four top teams will make the quarterfinals.

In Group B, Russia is 2-0-1 and Switzerland 1-0-1. The U.S., Slovakia and Kazakhstan all are 1-2-0.
